Could you live in a home that's the size of the average shipping container?

At just 18m² — approximately half the size of a double garage, this couple’s home includes most things you’d find in your own home, including a kitchen and a bedroom.

Considering that the average New Zealand home has approximately 209m² floor area, a few cutbacks are to be expected in a home of this size! However, the cost of a container-sized home is between $195,000 — $110,000 for the build and $85,000 for the land — makes it quite an attractive option for some. The couple comment “We don’t have to work crazy hours to be able to live the life we want to live.”

Their home was built off site by contractors who used timber framing, corrugated cladding, double glazed windows and a large amount of plywood on the inside.

Phil Quinney from Harcourts said people looking to buy a home in New Plymouth for under $200,000 would be looking at a small two bedroom unit at best.
